B Corps - 1996

About the "B" corps top

BDB: The Blue Devils, the 1996 edition of The Blue Devils Division II/III drum and bugle corps, is off to strong start. Our first music rehearsal attracted 71 brass and percussion enthusiasts - twice the number expected! To the delight of the BDB staff, we have consistently had around 65 musicians at rehearsals since then...not including the color guard.

Why the increase? With such a small corps in 1995 (total corps of 50 last year), we knew additional recruiting efforts needed to happen to justify offering the program in 1996. So, thanks to a few parents and returning corps members, BDB focused on a few events last fall to expose the organization, and particularly BDB, to high school-age youth. This and word- of-mouth is attributed to our exciting start.

The Blue Devils policy states that BDB recruiting efforts must be kept within a 60 mile radius of Concord, which we honored. Some members are from outside this radius, but they have demonstrated the ability to meet their family obligations to the Association. Furthermore, members of BDB are between the ages 13-19, which also is a Blue Devils policy.

The BDB curriculum emphasizes the following elements:

1. Education - music, movement
2. Development - social, emotional, physical, intellectual, spiritual
3. Recreation -- relaxed or hectic times to explore new interests, challenges, and/or to find constant stimulation
4. Performance - culmination to hours of preparation and rehearsal
5. Competition - comparative evaluation of the performances

Our musical program this year takes a slight turn from the BDB norm. We compare our production to the traditional Blue Devils `A' Corps style. And with the 25th anniversary of the `A' Corps this year, the BDB program is sure to appeal to our current supporters and all Blue Devils alumni.
