Conversations in Jazz

The 1991 Blue Devils present “Conversations in Jazz”, an innovative composition based on the works of Johnny Richards, Don Sebesky, and Bela Bartok. The first production is a composition by Don Sebesky in which he musically creates an imaginary conversation between Charley "Bird" Parker and Bela Bartok. The selection is "Bird and Bela in Bb". The second production is a combination of two songs, "Commencement" and "Apercu" and are by Johnny Richards. Experimental concepts in design and staging enhance the Blue Devils exploration of this controversial tangent of contemporary jazz. The 1990 DCI Champion Color Guard continues to expand and to challenge the concept of color guard, exploring controversial movement and equipment in presenting the unique musicality and personality that separates the Blue Devils from the rest.
